Exchange of strikes overnight into Sunday
Russia and Ukraine exchanged strikes overnight into Sunday, as a result of which, according to officials on both sides, three people were killed and 21 injured. Independent verification of the claims is difficult due to the ongoing war.
Strikes on St Petersburg and Leningrad Region
Ukrainian drones, according to reports, attacked oil facilities and an Ozon logistics centre in St Petersburg, as well as a data centre of the company VK in Leningrad Region. St Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov said on Telegram that one person was killed and five injured in the city; during a 'massive' attack, the Ruchyi oil terminal and industrial warehouses caught fire. According to him, 12 apartment buildings and two private houses were damaged, and firefighters continued to extinguish the fires. Ozon said a fire broke out at its logistics facility, staff were evacuated, and there were no injuries.
Consequences in Leningrad Region
Leningrad Region Governor Alexander Drozdenko said four people were hospitalised. Drone debris fell on a residential building in Gatchina, and in Novoselye 55 parked cars were damaged. Due to an emergency power outage, about 20,000 people in 50 apartment buildings were left without electricity. VK said its data centre was attacked but its services continue to operate.
Air defence claims
Russia's Defence Ministry said that overnight air defence destroyed 1,015 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory, Crimea annexed in 2014, and the Black Sea. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said 512 drones were heading toward the Moscow region, most of which were destroyed at a distance from the city.
Strikes on Ukraine and energy
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said two people were killed and 12 injured as a result of Russian overnight strikes on residential buildings. On X, he accused Moscow of 'deliberate' attacks on Ukraine's energy, oil and gas sectors 76 times since US President Donald Trump announced an energy truce last week. According to him, substations in Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr, Khmelnytskyi and Odesa regions were hit overnight, leaving tens of thousands of families without power. Over the past week, he added, Russia used about 2,700 strike drones, 1,700 aerial bombs and 66 missiles, mostly ballistic; the main targets were energy facilities. 'America must see that Russia is not taking any reciprocal steps in response to sanctions relief or agreements,' his statement quoted.
Claims by Russia's Defence Ministry and Ukraine's air defence
Russia's Defence Ministry said it struck Ukrainian logistics centres, ports and vessels which, it claimed, were used to support Ukraine's armed forces. It claimed a hit on a Nova Poshta logistics centre in Rivne, where, according to the ministry, dual-purpose goods, including components for medium- and long-range drones, were stored and distributed. It also reported a strike on a cargo ship carrying military and dual-purpose goods at sea about 30 km east of the port of Odesa. Ukraine's Air Force said it shot down or suppressed 152 Russian drones overnight.
