The key facts
- DeLorean will compete in the eVTOL Airspeeder races on the standard Mk3C chassis
- By the 2027–2028 season, a proprietary craft is planned with participation from UC Berkeley and Georgia Tech teams
- There is still no data on serial production of a flying car
DeLorean Enters Air Racing
According to Electrek, the DeLorean brand, known from the film 'Back to the Future', is preparing to take part in real air races. At the first stage, the company will use the standard Airspeeder Mk3C chassis — just like other participants of the championship. This is not a car for public roads, but an eVTOL — an electric vertical takeoff and landing craft designed for air racing.
A Bet on Cinematic Legacy
Airspeeder founder and head Matt Pearson drew attention to the brand's place in film history. According to him, long before the creation of a real flying car, audiences around the world already had an idea of what a flying DeLorean looks like.
Plans for 2027–2028
At the next stage, the company intends to develop its own racing craft. As reported, in the 2027–2028 season a collaboration is planned with student engineering teams from the University of California, Berkeley and the Georgia Institute of Technology.
From Stainless-Steel Bodies to Aviation
DeLorean is known for sports cars with stainless-steel bodies and gull-wing doors. Now the brand is trying to link that image with electric aviation and air racing. There is no data yet on turning the project into a serial flying car for mass production: the presented plans mainly concern participation in races and the development of a new craft.
