Storm Austin hits southern UK: more than 15,000 homes without power, part of Brighton's West Pier collapses
The first named storm of the season, Austin, brought gusts of up to 84 mph (135 km/h) on Jersey, left more than 15,000 homes without electricity and disrupted transport across southern England and Wales. In Brighton, part of the derelict West Pier collapsed into the sea. Storm Bertel is expected over the weekend, for which the Met Office has issued an amber warning.
