Thousands of sheep marched through central Madrid at the transhumance festival
On October 25, 2026, a flock of 1,250 sheep and 160 goats passed through Madrid's historic center as part of the transhumance festival — a celebration of the centuries-old practice of driving livestock between pastures. This year's route bypassed Puerta del Sol, where activists set up a protest camp after an eviction and the death of an 87-year-old resident. At Plaza de la Villa, a symbolic ceremony was held paying 50 maravedís per thousand animals, a tradition dating back to 1418.
