Scientists propose an explanation for the 40-year-old mystery of powerful brain potassium channels
A team from the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology led by Erik De Schutter showed why BK channels in mammals and birds conduct potassium 10-20 times better than in other animals. According to calculations in the STEPS model, weak channels compete for calcium and blur the precision of spike timing. The work was published in Communications Biology.
