Australian MP Helen Haines lost both legs after being hit by a car outside her office; suspect charged

Independent federal MP Helen Haines (65) was critically injured on Monday when a Toyota Land Cruiser struck her twice outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria. Police arrested 43-year-old Brendan Nagent, who was found with a knife in his car. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the incident a 'deliberate act'; the motive remains unknown. After surgeries, the MP had both legs amputated; she is in a stable but critical condition. Nagent has appeared in court.
