Overall death toll
At least nine people were killed in Ukraine over the past day as a result of Russian attacks, Ukrainian authorities report. In addition to Kyiv and Kharkiv, where one person was killed in each city, there were also victims in Sumy, Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk.
Kyiv
In the capital, one person was reportedly killed and 22 wounded, including four children, when ballistic missiles and drones attacked six districts of the city. Fires broke out in residential and non-residential buildings; houses, vehicles and infrastructure facilities were damaged. In the Dnipro district, one person was killed and six more, including a child, were wounded. The mayor of Kyiv said debris hit residential buildings and a car service station; there are fears that people may remain under the rubble.
Kharkiv region
The head of the region, Oleh Syniehubov, said that as a result of a separate series of strikes in the region, one person was killed and 15 were wounded, including three children. In Kharkiv itself, drones damaged residential buildings, a shop, vehicles and an office building, and a strike on a truck parking lot caused a fire in which four trucks, a trailer and a passenger car burned.
Context and rescue efforts
The strikes were carried out hours after Moscow and Kyiv agreed in principle to resume peace talks mediated by the United States. Rescue teams worked through the night and morning, extinguishing fires from elevated platforms and assessing the damage; photos taken after the strikes show damaged buildings and burned-out cars.
