Waymo enters Las Vegas airport
Waymo announced on Wednesday that it has begun carrying passengers to and from Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas. Pick-up and drop-off take place in designated 'autonomous vehicle zones' at Terminals 1 and 3. This is the sixth major airport served by the company: it already operates at Phoenix Sky Harbor, Nashville, San Antonio, San Francisco and San Jose airports.
Limited launch and competition
Waymo only opened public rides in Las Vegas in September, but it already serves an area of 24 square miles. Airport trips will initially be available to only a few passengers, and will later open to all customers. Competitor Zoox, owned by Amazon, already offers rides at this airport. In addition, in August state regulators issued permits that will allow Tesla and Uber to put thousands of robotaxis on the city's streets over the next year.
