The key facts
- The Financial Times reported two EU variants: a freeze along the current front line with a guarantee that Ukraine will not join NATO, or the cession of the remaining part of Donbas with Kyiv's membership in the alliance.
- State Duma deputy Yuri Afonin told Gazeta.Ru that both variants are unacceptable for Russia.
- Afonin pointed to inconsistent US warnings about Russian missile launches and worsening conditions of Ukraine's access to Starlink.
State Duma deputy rejects European settlement variants
Two European plans for settling the situation in Ukraine, reported by the Financial Times, are unacceptable for Russia. State Duma deputy Yuri Afonin told Gazeta.Ru about this. In his words, Brussels should assess the situation around the Ukrainian conflict more soberly and offer Moscow 'more acceptable' variants.
The essence of the European proposals
Earlier, media reported that the EU intends to offer Moscow two variants regarding Ukraine. The first is a freeze of hostilities along the current line of contact with a guarantee that Ukraine will not join NATO. The second is Ukraine's cession of the remaining part of Donbas to Russia, but on the condition of Kyiv's further membership in the alliance.
Afonin urged Europe to take the US position into account
'It seems that European politicians should look at the situation more soberly before making such proposals to Russia. Europe should reflect: is it really able to hold the situation if, for example, the US finally abandons the Ukrainian project?' the parliamentarian said. He recalled that Washington has begun warning Kyiv about the launches of Russian ballistic missiles not consistently, but only now and then, and has also 'worsened the conditions' of Ukraine's access to Starlink communications, which the deputy called the basis of the Armed Forces of Ukraine's combat control. 'Let Europe think about all this. And then offer Russia variants of a Ukrainian settlement that are more acceptable to us,' Afonin noted. Earlier it became known how many Ukrainians support the withdrawal of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from Donbas.
