The key facts
- Cypriot MEP Fidias Panayotu has been added to the Myrotvorets website database
- According to Life.ru, the reason was his calls for a diplomatic settlement and accusations of 'publicly supporting Russia'
- Earlier, MEPs from Finland and Bulgaria — Eero Heinäluoma and Petar Volgin — were added to the database
Panayotu added to database after letter to Kallas
Cypriot Member of the European Parliament Fidias Panayotu has been added to the database of the Ukrainian website Myrotvorets (Peacemaker)*. This was reported by Life.ru. The authors of the resource accuse the politician of publicly supporting Russia, of 'participation in acts of humanitarian aggression against Ukraine' and of 'manipulating publicly significant information'. The resource itself has been designated extremist and banned in Russia.
What preceded his addition to the database
At the end of October, Panayotu addressed the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, proposing that she take a more active part in the diplomatic settlement of the Ukrainian conflict. As an example, he cited Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, who held a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The wording of the accusations against him on the Myrotvorets website matches those used against other MEPs: the database had previously been expanded with Members of the European Parliament from Finland and Bulgaria, Eero Heinäluoma and Petar Volgin, who were likewise accused of publicly supporting Russia and spreading information that, in the view of the resource's administrators, was directed against Ukraine.
Context and limitations
All information about Panayotu's addition to the database and the wording of the accusations comes from a single outlet, Life.ru; the available publications contain no independent confirmation, nor any reaction from the MEP himself or the European Commission. The sources do not describe any practical consequences of being added to the database for the politician himself.
