The key facts

  • The danger is related to the heating of the case and the posture with thighs pressed together, not to Wi-Fi or radiation
  • There is not yet convincing evidence that a laptop causes permanent infertility
  • The doctor advises placing the laptop on a table or stand and not putting a pillow underneath that blocks ventilation

Overheating, not radiation

The habit of working for hours with a laptop on one's lap can negatively affect sperm quality due to overheating of the testicles, urologist-andrologist Timur Bitsoev of the SM-Clinica reproductive health center told Life.ru. According to him, for normal sperm production the temperature in this area should be slightly lower than body temperature, and prolonged exposure to heat can temporarily impair spermatogenesis. The problem is caused not only by the heating case but also by the posture itself with the thighs pressed together, which hinders natural cooling of the scrotum.

What is confirmed and what is not

The doctor noted that studies do indeed record a rise in local temperature when a laptop is used this way, but there is not yet convincing evidence that this leads to permanent infertility. The effect of Wi-Fi and electromagnetic radiation on male fertility also remains a subject of research: individual laboratory experiments recorded reduced sperm motility and increased DNA fragmentation, but such experiments do not prove that a laptop causes infertility. In Bitsoev's opinion, it is wrong to consider the gadget a direct cause of male infertility, since fertility is affected by age, varicocele, infections, smoking, alcohol, obesity, chronic diseases, and the use of certain medications.

Practical recommendations

The doctor recommends changing the habit primarily to those who are planning to become a father or have already encountered abnormalities in a spermogram; rare and short-term use of the device is unlikely to noticeably affect reproductive function. The most well-founded precaution, according to Bitsoev, is to reduce heat exposure: place the laptop on a table or a special stand rather than on the lap. He does not advise placing a pillow or blanket under the computer — they block the ventilation openings and increase heating. If you have to work without a table, it is better to take regular breaks; when planning a pregnancy, frequent hot baths and sauna sessions should also be avoided, but applying ice to the scrotum is unnecessary — it can injure the skin and does not improve sperm quality.

When to see a doctor

If pregnancy does not occur within a year of regular sexual activity without contraception, both partners need to be examined; when the woman is 35 or older, seeking help is usually recommended after six months of trying. A man is primarily advised to have a spermogram, but a single test does not always allow a definitive assessment of fertility — the results should be rechecked if necessary and discussed with a urologist-andrologist. Earlier, Life.ru, citing a urologist, reported that the disappearance of morning erections may be linked to chronic stress, impaired blood supply, hypertension, and sleep apnea: a single absence does not yet indicate a disease, but persistent changes over several weeks are a reason to see a doctor.
