Warsaw's statement amid the EU's pivot away from Russian energy
Polish Finance Minister Andrzej Domański said on Monday that the country will never accept a return to reports Anadolu.
Context: diversification and disagreements with Berlin
The statement came against the backdrop of the EU's ongoing rejection of Russian energy following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine: since 2022, EU countries have sharply reduced imports of Russian pipeline gas and agreed on a phased phase-out of remaining supplies. Poland was among the most active advocates of ending imports and diversified its supplies in advance — through the LNG terminal in Świnoujście and the Baltic Pipe pipeline from Norway, which began operating in 2022. Poland and Germany agreed at the forum to deepen economic and industrial cooperation, but Warsaw and Berlin have often diverged on energy policy and on how far Europe should maintain economic ties with Russia.
The debate in Germany
The issue has become politically charged in Germany: the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party advocates restoring imports of Russian oil and gas and reopening Nord Stream, arguing that cheap Russian energy is essential for German industry. AfD leader Alice Weidel has declared her intention to restore German-Russian economic ties.
