The key facts
- MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3 races at Phillip Island cancelled due to rain and poor visibility
- Marquez keeps the lead: Martin trails by 10 points, Bezzecchi by 50
- From 2027, the Australian Grand Prix moves to Adelaide for a six-year term
Race cancelled due to weather
The final MotoGP race of the Australian Grand Prix at the Phillip Island circuit was cancelled on Sunday due to heavy rain and poor visibility that made racing unsafe. According to the AFP news agency, the decision was made with the grandstands completely full; the Moto3 and Moto2 races were also cancelled. The organizers cited limited visibility, and according to Anadolu, also the inability of the medical helicopter to operate. After the cancellation, the riders completed a symbolic lap behind the safety car and greeted the fans on the main straight, saying farewell to a circuit that is leaving the calendar next year.
Consequences for the championship
The cancellation deprived Ducati's Marc Marquez of the chance to extend his lead in the title fight over the injured Jorge Martin of Aprilia, who was missing the race after breaking his forearm in Saturday's sprint race, which Marquez won. For Martin, the cancellation came as a salvation: he risked falling even further behind over the four remaining rounds of the season, but he leaves Australia trailing the seven-time world champion by just 10 points. Third place in the overall standings is held by Aprilia's Marco Bezzecchi, 50 points behind Marquez. The Aprilia team said that Martin's distal radius fracture is not displaced and no surgery will be required in Spain: treatment will take place in the coming days. It remains unclear whether Martin will be fit for the round in Sepang.
The end of the Phillip Island era
The cancellation was an inglorious finale to nearly three decades of the round at the coastal circuit two hours from Melbourne: Phillip Island has been on the calendar since 1997, but the contract expires this year. According to AFP, MotoGP promoter Sports Entertainment wanted to move the race to Melbourne's Albert Park, which hosts the Australian Formula 1 round, but the state government of Victoria insisted on keeping the circuit. After the talks collapsed, South Australia secured the race in Adelaide for six years from 2027 — it will be the first MotoGP round on a street circuit. The next round, the 19th of the season, the Malaysian Grand Prix, is scheduled for November 1.
Why it matters
The cancellation directly affected the title fight: Martin retained a 10-point deficit, and the outcome of the championship will now be decided over the four remaining rounds, starting with Malaysia on November 1 — while Martin's own participation in Sepang is in doubt due to injury. For fans and organizers, the cancellation also marked the final round at Phillip Island, and from 2027 the Australian Grand Prix will be held for the first time on a street circuit in Adelaide.
