Uzbekistan's Ministry of Construction clarifies: Tashkent has 61 illegal multi-story buildings, not 720

The Ministry of Construction and Housing and Communal Services corrected the figure previously announced by Minister Sherzod Khidoyatov: there are 61 illegally built multi-story buildings in Tashkent, not 720. The error arose from conflating the total number of illegal construction sites (more than 320) with the number of multi-story buildings. The ministry apologized.

The key facts

  • The Ministry of Construction clarified: Tashkent has 61 illegally built multi-story buildings instead of the previously announced 720

Clarification of data on illegal multi-story buildings

The Ministry of Construction and Housing and Communal Services of Uzbekistan reported that 61 multi-story buildings built illegally have been identified in Tashkent, not 720 as previously stated by Minister Sherzod Khidoyatov. The ministry explained that in the previous response the total number of illegal construction sites was mistakenly given as the number of multi-story buildings.

Overall picture and apology

In total, more than 320 illegal construction sites have been identified in the capital. This category includes not only multi-story buildings, but also individual residential houses, small shops, retail kiosks, pavilions and other structures. The ministry apologized for the mistake and asked media outlets and social media users to take the clarified data into account.

Minister's original statement

On October 13, Sherzod Khidoyatov stated in the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis that an inventory of more than 720 apartment buildings built without permits from architectural authorities had been conducted in Tashkent. According to him, these sites are under the control of the Prosecutor General's Office, and after the digitalization of processes and strengthened oversight, new unauthorized construction has stopped.
