The key facts
- Trump said he called Google CEO Sundar Pichai asking to rename the Atlantic Ocean, but was refused.
- According to Trump, Pichai replied that oceans wash the shores of many countries and asked him not to demand it.
- Earlier, Google renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the American Gulf and Lake Ontario to America Lake; the names are displayed differently for users in the US, Canada and the rest of the world.
The request to Google and the refusal
US President Donald Trump asked Google's leadership to rename the Atlantic Ocean in his honor or in honor of America, but was refused. This is reported by The Guardian. According to the outlet, Trump spoke about this at a rally in South Carolina, mentioning a call to the company's CEO Sundar Pichai.
Quotes from Trump and Pichai
“I only like two oceans: the Atlantic and the Pacific. I don't want to give the Trump or America name to any other ocean besides these two. We seriously considered the Atlantic Ocean option, and I called Google Maps. They handled the lake issue excellently... After the story with the gulf, they still haven't recovered. I said: 'Sundar, I'm thinking about the Atlantic Ocean,'” The Guardian quotes Trump. According to the president, Pichai responded with a refusal: “No, no, no. This time I can't do that... The situation with oceans is completely different, sir. They wash the shores of many countries. Please don't ask us to do this.”
Decision to keep the name
Trump added that he decided not to abandon his idea only partially: he stated that he had made the decision to keep the Atlantic Ocean's name unchanged.
Previous renamings
Google had previously agreed to renamings twice at Trump's request. First, the Gulf of Mexico was renamed the American Gulf — the new name in Google Maps is visible only to users from the US. Then Lake Ontario was renamed America Lake: in this case, the new name is displayed for US residents, Canadians see the former name, and the rest of the world is shown both options simultaneously. Trump then signed an executive order requiring US federal agencies to use the new name, amid a trade dispute between the US and Canada.
Trump's other initiatives
Earlier, Trump also proposed naming the Strait of Hormuz after himself. Last month, amid the ongoing US war with Iran, he wrote on Truth Social: “What about renaming the Strait of Hormuz to TRUMP STRAIT??? Like America itself, it would become much 'hotter'!”
