New support measure in Sakhalin

In Sakhalin, starting in 2027, a new support measure for women is planned to be introduced within the 'Happy Motherhood' movement. Governor of Sakhalin Oblast Valery Limarenko announced this in the 'Max' service.

Terms and amount of the payment

According to the head of the region, the measure will apply to expectant mothers who are preparing to raise a child without the participation of a second parent. This category of citizens will preliminarily receive a monthly payment until the child turns three. The benefit is tentatively set at 25% of the average monthly salary in Sakhalin Oblast.

Rationale for the initiative

'We want to support women who have not started a family but dream of having children. They will be able to join this program, and the government of Sakhalin Oblast will help them raise their children,' Limarenko explained.

Context: the rise of 'solo motherhood'

Earlier, according to the Telegram channel Baza, cited by Gazeta.Ru, over the past four years the number of women who decided on donor fertilization via IVF grew by 50%. The service is most often used by Russian women aged 30 to 45 who failed to find a suitable partner to start a family. The outlet notes the difference between the status of 'single mother' and 'solo motherhood': in the latter case, the woman herself decides to raise a child without a husband. Also, earlier in the State Duma there were calls not to condemn single mothers.
