The key facts
- The smallest patient saved by Moscow Region neonatologists weighed 367 grams
- Since the beginning of 2026, more than 3.1 thousand premature babies have been nursed back to health in the region
- A three-tier maternity care system operates in the Moscow Region
A Record Case of Intensive Care
Neonatologists of the Moscow Region saved a newborn whose birth weight was only 367 grams. As TASS was told by Deputy Chairman of the regional government — Health Minister Maxim Zabelin, this is the smallest patient that Moscow Region doctors have managed to nurse back to health. “In the practice of Moscow Region neonatologists there is a case of nursing a baby with a body weight of 367 g — this is the smallest patient they have managed to save,” the minister noted.
Statistics on Premature Babies
According to Zabelin, since the beginning of 2026, doctors in the Moscow Region have nursed more than 3.1 thousand children born prematurely. Among them were babies with very low and extremely low body weight — less than one and a half kilograms. Saving such patients, according to the minister, requires the involvement of several medical services at once: care begins during childbirth and continues until the child’s condition allows moving to the next stage of intensive care.
Maternity Care System
A three-tier maternity care system operates in the Moscow Region, uniting maternity hospitals, perinatal centers, and the Moscow Regional Research Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology named after Academician V. I. Krasnopolsky. These facilities are equipped with equipment to help women and newborns, including in cases of premature birth.
Other Cases from the Region’s Practice
Earlier, Life.ru reported that in April, doctors at the Vidnoye Perinatal Center saved a girl named Melania, born at the 28th week of pregnancy weighing 990 grams. She spent 52 days in intensive care; after treatment and rehabilitation, her weight reached 2,940 grams, and her developmental indicators became consistent with the norms for full-term babies. At the end of March, a boy born with a body weight of 1,250 grams was discharged from the same center: his mother was urgently hospitalized at the 28th week due to bleeding. For the first four weeks, the baby was in intensive care, where doctors supported his breathing and vital functions, and by discharge he had gained almost 2.5 kilograms.
