The key facts
- Kyiv stated that satellite communication restrictions hinder the operation of drones and air defense
- Musk emphasized: Starshield is owned by the US government, restrictions are set by the military or the president
- Starlink is a commercial service, Starshield is a direction for government customers with secure communications and Earth observation
The differences between the two systems are back in the spotlight
Ukraine's statements about restrictions in satellite communications have again drawn attention to the differences between Starlink and Starshield. Kyiv reported that these restrictions hinder the operation of drones and air defense systems. Elon Musk, in response, emphasized that Starlink and Starshield are separate systems. According to him, the Starshield systems are owned by the US government and are under its control, and restrictions on their use are set by the American military or the president.
Starlink — commercial internet for the general public
Starlink is a commercial satellite internet service owned by SpaceX. It is used by households, travelers, shipping companies and airlines; connection requires a special receiving terminal. The first satellites of the network were launched in 2019. Since they operate in low Earth orbit, their signal latency is noticeably lower than that of traditional communications satellites located much higher. According to Musk's explanation, Starlink is a commercial service controlled by SpaceX, which can be used for civilian or defense purposes, but the company does not allow its use in offensive military operations.
Starshield — secure communications and military tasks
Starshield is a SpaceX direction for creating satellite systems for government customers, including in the field of national security. Its tasks are broader than just internet access: secure communications, Earth observation, as well as hosting special sensors and other equipment on satellites. According to SpaceX, Starshield relies on the technologies and engineering experience accumulated in creating Starlink. The secure communications services use enhanced encryption, special terminals and separate network gateways. At the same time, as Kun.uz notes, it would be wrong to understand Starshield merely as a 'military tariff plan' of Starlink: within the program, special satellites and systems adapted to individual orders are also being developed.
Why the boundary between the systems is blurred
The publication raises the question of why the boundary between the two systems remains unclear, but the original text does not provide an answer to it — the material is limited to presenting the positions of Kyiv and Musk, as well as describing both systems.
