Libya's Parliament Ratifies Maritime Deal with Turkey

Libya's House of Representatives on Tuesday unanimously approved the agreement on the delimitation of maritime jurisdiction zones with Turkey, thereby reversing its previous rejection of the deal and its decision to sever political ties with Ankara, according to a statement from the Libyan parliament. The statement, issued in Benghazi, said that deputies unanimously voted to approve the memorandum of understanding signed between Turkey and Libya's former Government of National Accord on the delimitation of maritime jurisdiction zones in the Mediterranean Sea.

2020 Resolutions Repealed

The parliament also repealed Resolution No. 1 of 2020, which had rejected the ratification of the two memorandums of understanding signed between Libya and Turkey. In addition, deputies unanimously voted to repeal Resolution No. 6 of 2020, which provided for breaking off political relations with Ankara.

Context of the Agreement

Turkey and Libya signed the maritime jurisdiction agreement in November 2019 with the aim of establishing the boundaries of their maritime zones in the Mediterranean Sea. Tuesday's vote marks a reversal of the Libyan parliament's previous position, which had opposed the agreements and political relations with Turkey.
