UN condemns escalation of drone attacks

The UN on Monday condemned the growing number of deadly drone strikes on Sudan, warning that the expansion of air attacks is killing civilians and disrupting vital public infrastructure. “We are alarmed by the ongoing deadly drone strikes across the country, which are killing civilians, including children, and destroying essential services,” Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres, told journalists.

Weekend casualties and strikes on Khartoum

According to Dujarric, over the weekend drone strikes killed at least 19 people, including 10 children, and wounded others in the states of West Darfur, South Kordofan and North Kordofan. Humanitarian staff on the ground confirmed that on Monday drones attacked several districts of the capital Khartoum, including an area near the international airport. The strikes reportedly killed one civilian and led to the cancellation of several commercial flights following the weekend bombardment.

UN reaction

“We unequivocally condemn all of these attacks,” Dujarric said. He added that the UN was “deeply saddened” by the death of a Sudanese Red Crescent volunteer last week, when an air strike hit a medical facility.
