The key facts
- Zelensky: 16 ballistic missiles, 10 hits on energy facilities, about 550,000 households without power
- Ukrainian Air Force: 269 Shahed drones, 243 shot down or suppressed, 25 locations hit
- Rubio refuted Zelensky's claim about a pause in intelligence sharing
The overnight barrage and its consequences
On Monday morning, Ukrainian authorities reported a massive attack on Kyiv and its surroundings: at least one person was killed and more than half a million households were left without electricity. President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Telegram that Russia launched 16 ballistic missiles at energy infrastructure, 10 of which reached their targets, leaving about 550,000 households without power.
Ukrainian Air Force data and statements from Moscow
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the attack also included cruise missiles and drones and hit 25 locations. Of the 269 recorded Shahed drones, Ukrainian air defenses shot down or suppressed 243, as well as four missiles. Russia's Defense Ministry confirmed 'massive strikes' with high-precision weapons and drones, claiming it hit a data center, a logistics hub with components for drones and cruise missiles, a missile depot at a rail depot, a drone manufacturing facility, and a bulk carrier in the Black Sea about 130 km from Odesa, which, according to the ministry, was carrying military and dual-use cargo. Ukraine did not confirm these targets: according to the Kyiv City Military Administration, a medical facility and one of the metro stations were damaged in the capital.
Dispute over US intelligence
The strikes came against the backdrop of conflicting statements from Kyiv and Washington about intelligence sharing. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, on a visit to Uzbekistan on Monday, refuted Zelensky's Sunday statement about the suspension of part of the intelligence exchange: 'I don't know where he's getting that from... There was no pause,' adding that the focus should be on ending the war. Ukraine depends on US intelligence to detect fast-flying ballistic missiles; Ukrainian officials had reported that some recent attacks came without warning. Zelensky wrote: 'Another strike with ballistic missiles came in waves overnight, and once again there was no early warning from our partners.'
