Riots in major French cities
On October 17, nationwide protests took place in France, escalating into riots, Euronews reports. In Lyon, one of the oldest tourist offices was set on fire and looted, in Marseille aggressive groups broke into the city hall building, in Bordeaux the building of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry was damaged. Clashes occurred between demonstrators and the police, barricades were erected on the streets. Before the protests began, the government and security forces were put on heightened alert. On the embankment near the prefecture in Lyon, police used tear gas, shop windows and bus stops were smashed. Similar incidents also occurred in Paris and other major cities.
Government data on the scale of the actions
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said that by midday 140 actions involving 32,800 people had been counted in the regions, and 166 people were detained across the country. The protests took place against the backdrop of student demonstrations that have been ongoing for four weeks: schoolchildren expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of teachers, overcrowded classrooms, and outdated material and technical facilities of educational institutions. Most of these actions were peaceful, but in some cases there were clashes involving groups that staged riots. The police faced sharp criticism due to reports of excessive use of force in dispersing demonstrators.
