Statement by the Lebanese President

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said on Monday that Israel is not complying with the framework agreement signed under US mediation and that daily violations continue in southern Lebanon. The statement was made during a meeting with Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy at the presidential palace in Baabda, east of Beirut, the Lebanese presidency's press office reported. “The Israelis are not adhering to the framework agreement, and the south continues to face daily violations,” Aoun said.

Beirut's Position

Aoun stressed that the ongoing Israeli violations will not achieve their goals and will only strengthen the determination of the Lebanese people to defend their land and rights. According to him, the violations hinder the Lebanese state from implementing its stated objectives. The president confirmed Lebanon's commitment to a diplomatic solution, despite its difficulties, calling it “far less costly than a destructive war,” the price of which continues to be paid by the Lebanese people, especially the residents of the south. “It is time for Lebanon to get some peace,” he added. Aoun also welcomed any efforts by the Arab League to help Lebanon overcome the difficult circumstances.

Reaction of the Arab League

Fahmy, for his part, confirmed the Arab League's support for the Lebanese state and its institutions, rejecting any encroachment on the country's sovereignty. He expressed readiness to engage with Arab and Western countries to mobilize support for Lebanon and its people. Fahmy emphasized that the Arab position on Lebanon remains unified and that the organization is working to turn this support into practical measures and financial assistance.

Context of the Conflict

According to the agency, Israel has been carrying out attacks on Lebanon since March 2, as a result of which thousands of people have been killed and wounded, and more than 1.5 million residents have been displaced. On June 26, Lebanon and Israel signed a US-backed framework agreement providing for the phased withdrawal of Israeli troops from Lebanese territory, the deployment of the Lebanese army, and the disarmament of Hezbollah. Despite the agreement, Israel continued attacks on southern Lebanon. Israeli forces also continue to occupy Lebanese territory, including areas held for decades and territories captured during more recent wars and military operations.
