The key facts
- The Osman Gazi platform departed from Filyos port (Zonguldak) to the Sakarya gas field in the Black Sea.
- Erdogan called it 'the first factory of the Blue Homeland'; the platform is equipped with 21 modules and designed for 140 people.
- By 2027, production is planned to double to 20 million cubic meters per day — enough for 8 million households.
Dispatch of the platform
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in a video address on Saturday to the send-off ceremony of the Osman Gazi platform from Filyos port in Zonguldak province, said that the country is 'opening a new page in its energy history.' According to him, the platform — 'essentially a floating industrial facility' — is heading to its place of service in the Black Sea. Erdogan recalled that in July 2024 he announced the acquisition of the first floating production platform, and in May 2025 the platform, named Osman Gazi, was sent from Dolmabahce Palace in Istanbul to Filyos.
'The first factory of the Blue Homeland'
Erdogan described the Osman Gazi as the first production facility of the 'Blue Homeland' — the maritime component of the 'Turkish Century' initiative. He thanked everyone involved in the project and wished success to the personnel who will work on the platform.
Specifications and plans
The platform is equipped with 21 different modules and will process gas produced at the Sakarya field, feeding it via subsea pipelines to Filyos. Its length is 298.5 meters, width 56 meters, hull depth 29.5 meters, and crew 140 people. Erdogan called it a 'floating energy fortress' and stated that gas production in the Black Sea will double to 20 million cubic meters per day, and from 2027 every third household will use domestic gas.
Data from the Directorate of Communications
According to information from the Directorate of Communications, distributed on the NSosyal platform, the Osman Gazi will operate around the clock at its designated location in the Black Sea for 20 years, supplying processed gas to the national grid in a ready-to-use form. The platform is expected to bring the economy 3.5 billion dollars a year, and the total production of the Sakarya field will reach 20 million cubic meters per day — enough for the needs of 8 million households.
Statements by the minister
Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar spoke at the ceremony at Filyos port. He called the Osman Gazi Turkey's first floating gas processing facility and confirmed that the platform will raise daily production at the field to 20 million cubic meters by 2027. 'Our goal is to light the flame of the Sakarya field on the flare tower of the Osman Gazi by the end of this year,' the minister said. The Directorate of Communications reported that the platform will begin operations after the ceremony.
