A new episode in southern Syria
Israeli forces on Saturday entered the Wadi al-Rukkad area in the western countryside of Syria's Deraa province. This was reported by the state agency SANA citing its own information: the column consisted of two Israeli military vehicles. At the same time, according to the agency, Israeli reconnaissance planes conducted flights over the western part of the Yarmouk basin. No attacks or detentions were reported.
Actions the day before
On Friday, according to SANA, Israeli forces entered the area west of the al-Razania farm in the neighboring province of Quneitra, opened fire toward shepherds to prevent grazing of livestock, and then withdrew. The same day, Israeli troops entered the town of Abidin in the Yarmouk basin in the western countryside of Deraa and encircled it.
Context
Since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in December 2024, Israel has repeatedly carried out incursions into southern Syria, including movements in the buffer zone between the two countries. The buffer zone was established under the 1974 Disengagement Agreement between Syria and Israel — a UN-supervised area separating the forces of the two sides after the 1973 Arab-Israeli war. The Syrian government has repeatedly condemned the Israeli incursions as a violation of the agreement and demanded the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Syrian territory.
