The key facts
- Figma Specs — a Markdown editor for defining a company's design language, available as a standalone file or on the canvas
- Code layers entered open beta; MCP supports more than 20 new tools, including Open Code, Dia, Meta Muse and Sarvam
- Payload, acquired a year ago, is being integrated with Figma Make; Payload downloads grew sixfold over 12 months
New tools for agent workflows
At its first Config event in India, Figma introduced a set of features aimed at helping its own and third-party AI agents better adhere to a brand's design rules when building products with AI. Since AI is inherently non-deterministic, the company is providing tools for more predictable outcomes. Last week, Figma already opened access to its on-canvas agent to a wider audience of users.
Figma Specs
The main new feature is Figma Specs, a Markdown editor that allows describing a company's design language in a simple form. The document can serve as a reference for teams and agents when working in Figma. Specs can exist as a standalone file or be placed directly on the canvas. In addition to the text editor, users can reference other Figma elements, including canvas elements, embed FigJam diagrams, code layers and designs. Teams can also connect design libraries, code libraries and guidelines to manage design system context, and agents will be able to consult this centralized system to follow the rules.
Code layers and MCP partners
The code layers feature, which adds code to designs on the canvas for more interactive prototypes, is now available in open beta — it was announced in closed beta in June. Users can ask an agent to turn a design into code or modify part of the code to iterate on a prototype. Figma also announced support for more than 20 new tools through its MCP, including Open Code, Dia, Meta Muse and the Indian AI startup Sarvam.
Payload integration and the India market
A year ago, Figma acquired the open source headless CMS Payload. The company is now integrating it with the Figma Make product for generating dynamic sites and direct content management. According to the company, Payload downloads grew sixfold over the past 12 months. Figma opened its first office in India at the end of last year, with sales, partnerships, go-to-market and product support functions. India is the company's largest market outside the US; 40% of the top 100 companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange use the platform.
The company's position
Figma's chief design officer Loredana Crisan told TechCrunch in a comment: 'We see Figma as the place where software teams decide what they build and ship. One of the key changes AI has brought is the ability to create. Today, 17 times more lines of code are produced than before, but there are only 1.3 times more releases. A significant portion of code is created not for shipping, but to figure out what the product should be. It is created for design.'
