Charges and the investigation's position
A criminal case against Bekzod Olimov, a former probation inspector of the Akdarya district police department of the Samarkand region, has been sent to court. This was reported by the anti-violence project Nemolchi.uz, citing the indictment. Olimov has been charged under subparagraph «a» of part 2 of Article 103 of the Criminal Code of Uzbekistan (driving to suicide or an attempt thereof of a person dependent on the perpetrator) and part 1 of Article 112 (threat of murder or violence). The first article provides for a penalty of 7 to 10 years of imprisonment. According to the investigation, Olimov systematically beat his wife, abused her and repeatedly threatened to kill her. The investigation links the woman's suicide attempt on the night of May 6-7, 2026 to her husband's abuse. A forensic medical examination classified her injuries as grave bodily harm dangerous to life. Olimov does not admit guilt and denies the threat with a service weapon, the authors of Nemolchi.uz noted.
Previous complaints and the police department's response
According to Nemolchi.uz, the indictment describes previous cases of violence and threats known to law enforcement. According to the victim's testimony, on February 15, 2026 her husband threatened her with a service pistol, saying: «I'll shoot you in the forehead right now». Her father, who called 102, also told the investigation about the threat with the weapon. According to the woman, after that the head of the district police department Alisher Ibodov urged her and her father to forgive Olimov in order to preserve the family, promising to take the situation under control. The victim's father also told the investigation that the head of the police department and his deputies promised to hold preventive conversations and prevent new quarrels. According to Ibodov's testimony, he reconciled the spouses and promised the family help. Sanzhar Iboyev, deputy head of the district police department for public security, told the investigation about the woman's repeated appeals in 2025-2026: official investigations were conducted on them, and disciplinary sanctions were applied to Olimov. According to the victim, after the beating in January 2025 her husband received a reprimand around February of that year, and on March 6, 2026 he received another reprimand after the February incident with the pistol threat.
Questions for law enforcement
According to Nemolchi.uz, Olimov was taken into custody on July 4 — almost two months after his wife's suicide attempt; the project reported the incident in May. The project's authors raised questions about the timing of Olimov's detention and about why the woman's previous complaints, including the report of a threat with a service weapon, did not provide her with protection. Nemolchi.uz also called for an assessment of the actions of the police department's leadership, who knew about the violence and threats. «Much is said in the country about intolerance to violence and the protection of women. However, words must be confirmed by the actions that the police take after a report. How can one trust law enforcement if, in response to reports of violence by their own officer, a woman is urged to reconcile, while he continues his service? The system must protect victims and ensure the accountability of the guilty — including those who wear shoulder straps. What matters more to the police leadership: to protect the woman or to keep an aggressive officer in the system?» the project's authors asked.
