Storm paralyzes the capital of Chile
On October 14, 2026, Euronews reported on a powerful storm that struck Santiago: the capital of Chile was hit by hail, downpours, floods and power outages. Footage filmed by local resident Jennifer Vidal shows roads covered in hail and flooded streets; other recordings show water spreading across the roadway while people take shelter at the entrance of a nearby building.
Flooded districts and waterlogged buildings
The flooding affected several districts of the city, including Providencia, Las Condes and Estación Central. Water entered residential buildings, municipal service premises and the underground parking garage of the Alto Las Condes shopping center.
Metro disruptions and rescue operations
The downpour disrupted the Santiago metro: the Pedro de Valdivia station was closed, access was restricted at the Salvador station, and trains on line 2 ran only on separate sections. Firefighters carried out rescue operations in a flooded underpass tunnel in Peñalolén.
Authorities' warnings
Authorities warned of new thunderstorms and urged drivers to avoid low-lying sections of roads.
