MOSCOW, October 14. /INTERFAX.RU/ - The situation in Mauritius's resort areas remains calm, and no incidents involving Russian tourists have been recorded, the Russian Union of Travel Industry (RST) said on Wednesday, citing data from tour operators and local receiving companies.
“We and our partners are in constant contact with tourists. The receiving company and the tourists themselves report that everything is quiet at the resorts, and the situation does not affect tourists in any way. During the curfew, tourists stay at their hotels, where the usual rhythm of life continues,” said Andrei Podkolzin, an RST expert and head of the PR department at tour operator ITM group.
Dmitry Arutyunov, General Director of the tour operator Art-Tour and co-head of the RST committee on outbound tourism, also confirmed that the company's partners are not reporting any unrest in the island's tourist areas.
According to him, the protests are linked to the island's internal problems, including water supply disruptions and rising living costs. The company continues to monitor the situation and promptly inform clients through travel agencies.
Meanwhile, according to the Russian Embassy in Mauritius, the country's government has extended the curfew, which is in effect from 20:30 on October 14 until 05:00 on October 15. The diplomatic mission recommends that Russians on the island strictly observe the established restrictions.
According to the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR), there may currently be around 1,000-1,100 Russian tourists on the island. There are no direct flights between Russia and Mauritius.
As previously reported, unrest broke out in Mauritius on the night of October 13. Protesters blocked roads and burned tires in several areas of the island after a police officer shot a 27-year-old woman.
