The Landtag of Saxony-Anhalt adopted, by majority vote, a joint resolution by the AfD and BSW demanding an end to military and financial aid to Ukraine, as well as the lifting of sanctions against Russia.
The document calls on the state government to push, through the Bundesrat, for a course toward a diplomatic settlement and the prevention of further escalation of the war.
The resolution was supported by deputies from the AfD and BSW, who together hold 44 of the 83 seats in the Landtag. The CDU, SPD, the Greens, and the Left Party voted against.
The current Minister-President of Saxony-Anhalt, Sven Schulze (CDU), called the initiative a political show and a "gift" for the BSW. According to MDR, party representatives during the debates called to "take Russia's security interests into account."
Ukraine's ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev, called the initiative "the height of absurdity." As German media note, the decision is largely symbolic, since sanctions against Russia and aid to Ukraine fall within the competence of the German federal government and the EU.
