NFL announcement

The NFL has announced that Jay-Z will headline the Super Bowl LXI halftime show. The game will take place on February 14, 2027, Valentine's Day, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California — the home arena of the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers. The decision was reported by the AFP agency, citing a league statement; the rapper himself, according to Anadolu, announced the performance on ESPN and on online platforms.

From producer to performer

The key change is that Jay-Z, whose company Roc Nation has produced the show since 2019 and selects the headliners, will perform at it himself for the first time. He has never previously taken the stage at this game. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said that since the first agreement with Roc Nation, he has had one wish: that Jay-Z would one day take the stage himself, 'when the moment feels right to him.' According to Goodell, the rapper has been on the league's list of desired performers since 2019, and at the time, as Jay-Z himself recalled, he replied: 'If this is about me performing at the Super Bowl, we can end this conversation right now.'

Context and open questions

The announcement does not specify whether Jay-Z will be the sole headliner. In a comment cited by BBC News, the NFL noted that discussions about possible guest stars are now beginning, and 'of course, his wife Beyoncé will be at the top of the list.' Beyoncé has already performed at the Super Bowl halftime show twice — in 2013 as headliner and in 2016 with Coldplay and Bruno Mars — and also sang the U.S. national anthem at the 2001 Super Bowl. Jay-Z himself has not announced any guests. Notably, at the concerts at SoFi Stadium that concluded this past weekend, closing the tour marking the 30th anniversary of his debut album Reasonable Doubt, John Legend, DJ Khaled, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg joined him on stage — AFP cites this as an indication of the possible caliber of guest stars. euronews notes that the announcement came a few days after the first reports of negotiations and online debates about the artist's relevance given his absence from the charts.

The show as an award-winning format

In recent years, the Super Bowl halftime show has earned its creators Emmy awards: Bad Bunny's performance in February received a record seven awards, including one for outstanding live entertainment special, while Kendrick Lamar's show the year before was recognized for musical direction. Kendrick Lamar, according to Anadolu, was the last rapper to headline — two years ago. Roc Nation will once again serve as executive producer of the LXI show, with Hamish Hamilton as director. For reference: Jay-Z has 25 Grammy awards and 89 nominations — the second-highest total in history after Beyoncé; Forbes named him the first billionaire in hip-hop history in 2019.
