The new city project

On Thursday, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed projects for the construction of the city of Yangi Karshi (New Karshi) and the creation of a tourist complex along the Karshi Main Canal, UzNews.uz reports. A site of 5,200 hectares has been chosen for the new city between the A-378 highway 'Samarkand – Guzar' and the 4R-79 road leading to Shakhrisabz. According to the outlet, this is unused desert and pasture land of low quality. The preliminary master plan is designed for 500,000 residents.

Prospect of up to 1 million residents and relocation of government institutions

Shavkat Mirziyoyev emphasized that the city should be planned as a major center that in the future will be designed for 1 million residents and will become a modern expansion of Karshi. The regional khokimiyat and other government institutions will be relocated to Yangi Karshi. It is also planned to build a congress hall, concert halls and hotels, forming a center capable of hosting major international forums — similar to those held in Samarkand and Bukhara.

Transport

The transport network must ensure convenient connections between the city and other territories. The President pointed out the need to launch public electric transport, and, if necessary, a surface metro, which would connect the airport and railway station with the new city.

Tourist complex on the canal

The presentation also covered a project for a tourist complex along the Karshi Main Canal. A total of 235 hectares of land have been allocated for the creation of a three-kilometer zone. Implementation is divided into four stages: in the first, covering 30 hectares, a craftsmen's town is to be built and a tourist zone created. The complex will include hotels, restaurants and shops, a museum, a water park, children's playgrounds, as well as an artificial lake for boating.

Design assignment

The President instructed that the master plan of the new city and the master plan of the tourist complex be thoroughly developed with the involvement of leading foreign design and architecture companies.
