The key facts

  • Lyon beat Nice 2:1 and top the table; five teams have 14 points each
  • Monaco lost 0:1 to Lorient — their first league defeat of the season
  • Paris FC beat Rennes 4:3, Marseille thrashed Angers 5:2

Lyon move top

Lyon, playing with ten men, claimed a hard-fought 2:1 victory over Nice and moved top of the Ligue 1 table, while previous leaders Monaco suffered their first defeat of the season. Five teams now have 14 points each, with Lyon ahead of Paris Saint-Germain, Paris FC, Lille and Monaco on goal difference. The match was watched by a local hero — French cycling prodigy Paul Seixas. Twenty minutes from the end, Keito Nakamura was sent off. Eli Vahi, who opened the scoring in the 18th minute (his second goal of the season), failed to equalise in stoppage time due to a very tight offside call, described by AFP as 'razor-tight'. The turnaround came with two goals in three minutes before the break: Pavel Shulch tapped in after a rebound, and Tanner Tessmann headed the hosts in front. In the second half, Axel Witsel hit the crossbar and Vahi the post, shortly after Nakamura's dismissal for a high foot.

Monaco lose in Lorient

Noah Cadiu's second-half penalty prevented Monaco from returning to the top — the Principality club lost 0:1 in Brittany at the Stade du Moustoir. The penalty was won by full-back Dembo Silla, brought down by Monaco captain Denis Zakaria in the 60th minute. Finnish goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky guessed the direction of the shot, but Cadiu struck precisely into the corner. It is Monaco's first league defeat of the current season.

Paris FC snatch win over Rennes

Paris FC joined the leading group thanks to a Lassine Sinayoko penalty in stoppage time — 4:3 against Rennes, who dropped to fifth place, one point behind the leaders despite striker Esteban Lepaul's hat-trick of penalties. Maxime Lopez twice put the hosts ahead, but Lepaul, who received his first call-up to the France squad during the recent international window, levelled from the spot each time. Sinayoko seemed to have sealed the win with a spectacular overhead kick 14 minutes from the end, but a careless handball by Brazilian substitute Otavio gave Lepaul the chance to equalise for the third time. But Sinayoko had the final say: after a VAR review that spotted Valentin Rongier pulling his shirt, he converted the penalty.

Marseille thrash Angers

Marseille claimed a much-needed victory, thrashing Angers 5:2 to pull away from the relegation zone. Lilian Raolisoa opened the scoring for Angers, but before the break Marseille responded through Himaad Abdeli and Noum Kamissoko. Amin Gouiri scored his fifth goal of the season, tapping in after a penalty saved by Antonio Lopez. Amin El Ouazzani reduced the deficit from the spot, but late goals from Amin Harit and Igor Paixao gave Marseille only their third win in seven matches. Bruno Genesio's side began the weekend above the transitional 16th place only on goal difference, having also lost their first two matches in the Europa League.

Auxerre win in Le Havre

Winless Le Havre remain bottom of the table: a brace from Cameroonian striker Danny Namaso helped Auxerre leave Normandy with a 3:1 victory and move clear of the relegation zone.
