New Appointment

Giorgi Zurabashvili has been appointed as the special representative of the Prime Minister of Georgia for relations with Russia. The personnel decision was announced at a briefing by the head of the Georgian government, Irakli Kobakhidze. According to him, the peaceful resolution of the conflict with Russia, the preservation and development of trade and economic ties, as well as a constant dialogue on humanitarian issues, are among the country's most important priorities.

Career of the New Special Representative

Previously, Zurabashvili held the post of First Deputy Foreign Minister of Georgia, to which he was appointed in July 2025. Before that, the diplomat represented the republic in Ireland as ambassador for several years.

Predecessors in the Post

The post of special representative for relations with Moscow had been vacant since August, when the previous representative, Giorgi Kajaia, left it of his own accord. Kajaia had held the post since March 2024, succeeding Zurab Abashidze, who was in charge of contacts with Russia for 12 years.

Context: Tbilisi's Course

Earlier, Kobakhidze called Georgia's refusal to join anti-Russian sanctions a correct and pragmatic decision. According to the prime minister, the correctness of the chosen course was confirmed by the actions of the United States, which temporarily allowed operations with Russian diesel fuel. He also recalled that Tbilisi had faced serious international criticism for its unwillingness to impose restrictions against Moscow.
