First win of the season

Tottenham on Monday beat league newcomers Coventry 3:1 in the final match of Premier League matchday 7 and claimed their first league win of the season. Before that, Roberto De Zerbi's team sat bottom of the table with three points from six games. According to AFP, Tottenham was the only team across England's six top divisions without a league win, despite heavy summer spending. De Zerbi held a training camp in Marbella (Spain) before the match.

Maddison's goal and Coventry's reply

In the 14th minute, James Maddison, after Mohammed Kudus's run down the right flank, struck a volley from outside the box into the top corner past goalkeeper Carl Rushworth. According to Anadolu, it was his first Premier League goal since February 2025 — a goalless run of 610 days following a lengthy injury absence. AFP notes it was Maddison's first start in 17 months; he tore the cruciate ligament in his right knee in August 2025. In the 49th minute, Jack Rudoni equalized after a series of deflections in the box, scoring from close range.

Marmoush and Davis's stoppage-time goal

In the 58th minute, Omar Marmoush, on loan from Manchester City, got past Milan van Ewijk and fired powerfully from outside the box to put Tottenham ahead — his first goal for the club. Late in the second half, Dejan Kulusevski came on as a substitute, having not played for 526 days due to a knee injury sustained in May 2025, and was greeted with applause. According to Anadolu, Andrew Robertson picked up an injury and was replaced by Ben Davis in the 69th minute. In the sixth minute of stoppage time, Davis, with the outside of his left foot from outside the box, made the final score 3:1.

Table and reaction

The win lifted Tottenham to 16th place with six points, while Frank Lampard's Coventry dropped to 17th, also on six points. After the match, Maddison told Sky Sports: 'I just wanted to play well, show my quality and what I bring to the team and what the team has been missing for the last 18 months since my last start.' He added that he believes he can help the team climb the table after last season, when the club narrowly avoided relegation.
