Funding round and valuation

Tolan, a startup that created an AI companion to help with managing everyday life, relationships, emotions and goal achievement, raised $30 million. Investors in the round include Union Square Ventures, Khosla Ventures and Homebrew. According to Upstarts Media, the round doubled the company's total funding and raised its valuation above the previous $120 million. The startup itself did not disclose the new valuation; PitchBook values it at more than $268 million with 'moderate confidence'.

Product and monetization

Users interact with the app through a cartoon character that provides support and helps manage task lists. Full access to features requires a paid subscription with several tiers. The company told Upstarts Media that its annual recurring revenue (ARR) is in the range of 'tens of millions of dollars'.

Users and market context

Tolan is one of the few AI companions to achieve notable success: according to the company, the app has more than 250,000 active users who held more than 70 million conversations over the past year. About 70% of users are women, 40% are parents. According to unofficial reports, the app is especially popular among neurodivergent people who need extra support — emotional or with task organization. TechCrunch notes that Tolan found a balance between usefulness and the absence of 'weirdness', unlike the wearable AI companion Friend, which users called 'very cringe', The New York Times called 'hated', and Wired said 'has no soul'. Former segment leader Character.ai recently filed for bankruptcy after its founders returned to Google; the remaining staff are moving to Disney, which acquired part of its assets.

Risks and competition

In TechCrunch's view, Tolan may face growing competition from new AI agents that don't just 'talk' with the user but help plan and complete tasks. For example, Meta equipped its agent Muse with a cute avatar and plans to release it in the future as a hardware product as well. In addition, the startup has to account for risks associated with AI emotional support: several lawsuits have been filed against developers of general-purpose AI apps claiming that interaction with chatbots contributed to users' suicides.
