Bayer ended Freiburg's winning streak
Bayer came back after conceding and beat the in-form Freiburg 2:1 in a Bundesliga match on Sunday, October 18. Ibrahim Maza and Patrik Schick took turns assisting each other: Schick equalized, and Maza scored the winning goal.
Course of the match
Freiburg — the league's most in-form team — opened the scoring in the 14th minute. Right-back Philipp Treu, after a counterattack, flicked the ball with his heel to put Derry Scherhant into a shooting position. Both players received their first call-up to the Germany national team from Jürgen Klopp in October, and the national team coach watched the match from the stands. Five minutes later, Schick played a one-two with former Aston Villa winger Moussa Diaby and set up Maza for a shot — he scored. In the 60th minute, Schick shot over the crossbar, but in the 76th minute Maza advanced with the ball on the right, beat several defenders and delivered a precise pass, after which Schick scored with a controlled shot to win it for Bayer.
Standings
After a sensational defeat to debutant Elversberg in the opening matchday, Bayer has collected 13 points out of a possible 15 and sits fourth — level on points with Freiburg but behind them on goal difference. Champions Bayern lead the table and will play away at Freiburg in the next matchday.
