The key facts

  • Iranian exports to Pakistan temporarily halted due to banking sanctions — Peyman Sanandaji, Tehran Chamber of Commerce
  • Imports from Pakistan to Iran continue, land border remains open
  • Pakistani importers are required to file electronic import forms through Pakistan's banking system

Exports halted, border open

Iranian exports to Pakistan have been 'temporarily' halted due to banking sanctions, while imports from Pakistan continue, Iranian media reported on Saturday. This was stated by Peyman Sanandaji, head of the transport commission of the Tehran Chamber of Commerce, in an interview with Mehr News Agency. He denied reports of the border crossing being closed, emphasizing that the shared land border remains open.

Payment processing problems

According to Sanandaji, Pakistani importers are required to submit electronic import forms for goods purchased in Iran through Pakistan's banking system. Sanctions against Iran's banking system have complicated this process, creating problems for both Iranian exporters and Pakistani importers.

Warning and sanctions context

Sanandaji warned that if the banking restrictions persist, Iranian exports to Pakistan will in fact remain halted. Iran's banking sector is under broad US sanctions, which restrict transactions with Iranian financial institutions and may subject foreign banks working with sanctioned Iranian entities to American measures.
