Advance toward the Abdin dam
Syrian state media reported that on Thursday about 10 Israeli military vehicles advanced toward the Abdin dam in Daraa province in southern Syria, with Israeli military aircraft flying over the area. According to Alikhbariah TV, Israeli forces opened fire — described by the channel as 'indiscriminately' — toward agricultural land and searched homes in the eastern part of the village of Abdin. Daraa province borders the occupied Golan Heights.
Earlier incidents
Earlier on Thursday, according to the same TV channel, Israeli forces set fire to a house and a fodder warehouse in the Daraa countryside. The channel provided no details about possible casualties or the extent of the damage. The day before, as reported by the Syrian state agency SANA, an Israeli column of five vehicles entered the same area through the Tel Abu Ghaitar checkpoint near the occupied Golan Heights: the forces raided the home of a local resident, detained several young men for about an hour, seized a motorcycle, fired shots toward empty land, and withdrew.
Context
Israel has intensified its military operations in Syria since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in December 2024, carrying out airstrikes on military facilities and expanding its presence in the buffer zone of the occupied Golan Heights. Syrian authorities have repeatedly condemned Israeli incursions and attacks as violations of the country's sovereignty and demanded that Israel withdraw to the positions stipulated by the 1974 disengagement agreement. Damascus and Tel Aviv, with US mediation, are negotiating security arrangements and the restoration of the 1974 agreement.
