Attacks in southern Lebanon

On October 16, the Israeli army carried out airstrikes, artillery shelling and demolitions in southern Lebanon, the National News Agency of Lebanon reported. Military equipment, including a bulldozer accompanied by two tanks and several vehicles, was advancing toward the southern outskirts of the border town of Kfar Shuba.

Strikes on the Tyre, Nabatieh and Jezzine districts

According to the agency, Israeli aircraft struck the town of Mansouri in the Tyre district. Artillery shelled the surroundings of Bint Jbeil and the Srebbine and Zibqin valleys, and also fired intensively at the valleys and wooded areas of Srebbine. In the Nabatieh district, forces carried out two simultaneous large demolitions — in Kfar Tebnit next to a school and in Zawtar al-Sharqiya toward Nabatieh al-Fawqa. They also shelled the Jarmak area in the Jezzine district and the surroundings of Kfar Shuba. Separately, an Israeli drone dropped a stun grenade on the outskirts of Khiyam; there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

Casualty toll and the agreement

According to official figures released on Monday by the Lebanese government, Israeli attacks on Lebanon since March 2 have killed 4,389 people and wounded 12,424. The attacks continue despite the US-sponsored 'Framework Agreement' signed by Beirut and Tel Aviv on June 26, which provides for the phased withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory and the deployment of the Lebanese army. Despite the agreement, Israel continues strikes in southern Lebanon and maintains control over Lebanese territories — some have been occupied for decades, others were seized during recent wars and military operations.
